The Hot-Rod PL mount for Canon 7D

via abelcine:

The Hot Rod 7D-PL Mod is a custom modification that allows the use of any 35mm PL-mount cinema lenses on the 7D, an important addition now that HDSLRs are being utilized in more and more professional environments. The 7D-PL Mod can be purchased for your existing 7D, as well as part of a Deluxe Kit, which includes a modified Canon 7D, a PL adapter, support system and handles. Check out the video to learn more about this exciting mod!

The 7D is ‘modified’ in a very physical way: some of the interior parts are changed and you lose the optical viewfinder. It basically makes for a movie-only, very affordable HDSLR camera!

The whole kit is available for $4800 (pre-order – shipping in April) at Abelcine.

“City of lakes”: Wedding Photography 2.0

Wedding photographers are plenty, and so some people take it one step further. Kevin Shahinian of Pacific Pictures is “leading the wedding videography industry in creating hollywood/bollywood concept videos that add a story element to the clients wedding video“.

In the fall of 2009, Melissa & Samir embarked on an incredible journey to Udaipur, India, to fulfill a lifelong dream of having their wedding in the country of their ancestry. This transcendent place, affectionately called the “CITY OF LAKES,” located in the breathtaking region of Rajasthan, would be the setting for their extravagant, three-day marriage celebration, and the backdrop of our unprecedented film production – shot entirely on-location. We believe this to be the first ever live event/scripted concept production ‘hybrid’ film ever produced on this scale. It was shot entirely on DSLRs, the Canon 5D Mark2 and 7D.

HotRod: 7D + Optimo lens

Look at the clothes they put on this baby: the Canon 7D used for a commercial, with a slightly bigger lens in front of it than most people will ever use: the Thales Angenieux Optimo 24-290. Costs over $500 to rent for a day. Just the lens, that is.

550D equivalent to 7D for 1080p video

At cameratown.com they compared the new Canon 550D (Rebel T2i) with the 7D and concluded that, for video purposes, they’re equally good.

If the main reason you were considering the EOS 7D was for the great video capabilities of the camera and not for the photographic features, then I would definitely recommend that you to consider the Rebel T2i as an alternative. The extra $900 spent on the 7D will not give you any real noticeable benefit with regard to video quality, at least at the ISO settings you’re likely to use (up to ISO 1600). Virtually all of the advanced capabilities of the 7D center around its photographic capabilities (AF performance and frame rates) and not its video differences.

Example of 60p to 24p slowmotion on Canon 7D

The Bui Brothers tried out the Canon 7D for slow motion shots: filming at 60 fps (1080p) and then conforming it to 24 fps: a slowdown of 60%.

We took the 7D out and shot some fun footage at the West Hollywood Halloween Carnaval. The parts with audio were shot in 24p with the 7D and the slow motion parts were shot in 60p. We used cinema tools to conform the 60p videos to 24p, we could have slowed the 60p video down to 30p but wanted to shoot in 24p for coolness.

Here’s the result:

Syndicate: dual 7Ds for 3D stereoscopic movies

Syndicate, a visual effects studio from Sweden, has created a set-up with two Canon 7Ds glued to one another so that they can do 3D stereoscopic live capture with it.

A ready to rumble solution for 3D cinematic imagery! The dual 7D head is now calibrated and delivers footage that is very keen on the eyes. Again the small sized cameras and the low noise / high ISO is a solution ideal for Stereoscopic films. This is the first out of two 3D rigs syndicate will start to produce. It covers the above 120 mm in between eyes distance. Then next step is a mirror solution covering 0-120 mm eye distance. The clips bellow are all post rendered to be viewed with the old school cyan/red kind of 3D glasses. The two streams can off-course be rendered in any shape for any kind of dual projection i.e polarized or one screen per eye etc.

Canon launches 7D with, at last, 1080p24

via dpreview.com: Canon has announced a ‘little brother’ to the 5D: not a full-frame camera (it’s a APS-C) but one that is capable of the perfect cinema capture: 1080p at 24 fps. Whereas the 5D mk II could only do 30 fps with 1080p, the 7D lets you choose between:

  • 1920 x 1080 (29.97, 25, 23.976 fps)
  • 1280 x 720 (59.94, 50 fps)
  • 640 x 480 (59.94, 50 fps)

The fact that is not a full frame camera is not necessarily a bad thing: you can keep on using all your Canon dSLR lenses.

The 7D camera is launched at US: $1699.
